Kocie Lake

A small lake (2.52ha and 2,8m max. depth) located in a land gully west from Lake Ostrowiec in the Drawa National Park. It used be drained out by a stream going west to River Drawa, but nowadays has become a no-outlet lake because of the overall lowering of water levels. Its waters are fertile and average translucency reaches 2,7m deep. Light gets to the most part of the lake then. Because of a low depth even in the summertime this lakes heat up evenly and are stirred by winds; however, near the bottom the oxygen supply gets rather poor. The fish fauna is dominated by tench and sunbleak. Lake Kocie is surrounded with rushes of cattail and mud sedge reeds. Despite of the eutrophic character of the lake, its underwater vegetation is dominated by stone-wart. Its surface is covered with loose patches of white and yellow water lilies. The edges of the lake are filled with alders. Swans tend to hatch here. Sicieński Kanał runs through the southern bank. A blue tourist trail runs along this presently dry canal from Moczel to Lake Ostrowiec.
